The development of a territory through gastronomy can only be generated by finding the confluence between community, sustainability and knowledge. The purpose of this project is to promote a network of actors with the rural R+D center as a catalyst space for innovations in the local food system, with participatory processes for the development of gastronomic research projects aligned with the SDGs.

The project was selected from more than 80 proposals to participate in Rural Experimenta III, an initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and Medialab Prado of Madrid, co-creating the idea of the project with other collaborators.

RURAL EXPERIMENTA is a laboratory of experimentation and citizen innovation for rural areas, a meeting and production space aimed at facilitating cooperation between people for the development of experimental cultural projects that try to solve social challenges, transform imaginaries or propose new forms of life, and for the creation of new communities of learning and practice that carry out these projects.

Initial challenge

The project seeks to articulate a rural R+D center as a space for education, experimentation, training, valorization of local production and development of new products and initiatives aimed at reducing food waste.

The objectives set were:

  • Review projects at different scales that would allow identifying keys for the definition of the center.
  • Mapping the agents related to the center and the value they provide.
  • Definition of the possible organizational structure.
  • Proposal of a
methodology for the replicability of the center.

Route

For 5 days it was possible to co-create the proposal with other collaborators related to the project through different ideation activities, visits and interviews and other projects in Vilafranca del Cid and l’Espluga de Francolí.

Conclusions

Being able to materialize an idea and make it work is not an easy task. Ideas on paper can work but the important thing is to take action.

Rural Experimenta allowed us to start the Indaga project with a lot of motivation, seeing that cooperation between professionals and the connection of all this knowledge allows us to go further than doing it alone. Indaga has evolved a lot since then and it is in part thanks to the countless experiences, contacts, references and information received throughout all this time, which we still continue to analyze carefully and which helps us to continue working with the project.
